Facts about Universities in the US

The United States is a great place to study with hundreds of top ranking universities and availability of almost every course in the book. But the major problem that foreign students face in opting to study in an US based university is the relative cost involved.


The cost factor
Let us look at some of the costs that the student opting to study in universities in the US has to deal with;

  • GRE and TOFEL exams are compulsory for admissions in US universities and they involve registration fees. Then there is cost involved in getting books, CD's and tutorials if any
  • Getting admission forms from colleges involves lots of cost and so does applying to them though international couriers
  • Then apart from transport cost there is university tuition fees, books, insurance costs and living expenses

Financial help
All the above expenses sum up to a huge total that not most students from developing countries can afford. The only option that remains in front of them is to secure a financial aid from their opted universities. Now getting a financial aid is not as easy as thought, as the competition is tough and can get tougher in some cases. Private universities are more likely to provide a financial aid than state universities. But even here financial aids are very different from complete scholarships which are even more difficult to procure. Most universities don't offer complete scholarships.


The way out
This doesn't mean that financially weak students cannot pursue an education in the US. In fact there are many sources from where you can get help; like from a bank or a lending institution. Generally the interest rates in these cases are a bit low and can be easily repaid after the course is over. Apart from that students can opt in for part time jobs or campus jobs. Most campus jobs can pay you up to $5 to $ 15 for an hour. Students in US are allowed to work for 24 hours per week during term sessions and for unlimited hours during vacations.
So the odds may seem to be on your side but if you are really inclined to study abroad there are lots of options open.
