Online universities are a developing trend with more and more universities offering some or the other kind of online courses. So are there any quality norms governing online universities? Well, there is; and therefore it becomes inevitable for any student to check university accreditation status before applying for one.What is accreditation?
Accreditation is a voluntary, non-governmental/governmental system of assessment used to defend the public interest and to validate the quality of service provided by affiliate institutions. US Accredited online university are accredited by USDA recognized bodies.
US accrediting bodies
The United States Department of Education or the USDE recognizes six organizations as accrediting bodies. These recognized accrediting bodies are MSA (Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools), NASC (Northwest Association of Schools and Colleges), NCA (North Central Association), NEASC (New England Association of Schools and Colleges), SACS (southern association of colleges and schools), WASC (Western Association of Schools and Colleges). These accrediting bodies cover all major states in the US. Distance education programs are accredited by the national Distance Education and Training Council (DETC).
It is to be noted that the USDE does not directly accredit educational institutions/ programs but only publishes a list of nationally recognized accrediting bodies as authorities in various states.
Queries regarding accreditation
Before opting in for a regular/online university it is very important to check if the university is accredited or not. And not only that; one also needs to check if the accrediting body is a UDSE (United States Department of Education) recognized one. In case of any doubts the United States Department of Education can be contacted personally.
